Pyin Oo Lwin
offers visitors
some of the best and most authentic trekking in Myanmar. The
countryside around the town has retained almost all of its cultural and
ecological diversity and tradition. Rural values and agricultural
methods are highly regarded and preserved, and although the coming of
electricity and motor-driven equipment is easing the work of farming
families, the customary and historical traditions of the mainly Shan peoples
are authentically preserved and observed.
Osama
(known as 'Rock 'n roll Muslim' by Lonely Planet) is probably the only full
time trekking guide in Pyin Oo Lwin. He can be contacted at the
Dahlia
Motel most mornings or evenings ((085-22255,
21912) or by email: trekking@pyinoolwin.info. His 2006 charges for a full day's trek with
food and water are $8 ($5 half day) per person. A full day's trek of 8
or 9 hours covers about 10 miles. According to the kind of trekking
you want to do, Osama can conjure up an itinerary to suit you. He can
also make arrangements for visits to further away places by car.
Yazar is one of the guides from the Royal
Park View Hotel, who knows the area well. Here he escorts visitors
to the series of caves and waterfalls at Wet Wun. The hotel
specialises in enjoyable full or half day excursions, and can assist in safe
and reliable transport to all the places mentioned in the
What to See page. Arrangements by email at r-parkview@myanmar.com.mm.
