Pyin Oo Lwin Nursery is on the left of the road to Kandawgyi National Gardens (223 Nandar Street, ((085)21262 and 09-2131430, email: polnursery@mail4u.com.mm). (See the town map). It is one of the oldest garden and nursery centres in Pyin Oo Lwin, and has developed a wide range of seeds and plants that grow well in this climate and at this altitude. Specialities are high altitude orchids, and the Nursery has strong links with other orchid growers in California, Yunnan and Bangkok. Some of the latest hybrids can be seen and bought here (see the Gallery below). The nursery's seed programme is well known throughout Myanmar. Almost all varieties of suitable vegetables and flowers are prepared and packaged, and are available throughout the year. Bulbs of all kinds of lilies are also nurtured and for sale, some suitable for growing at lower altitudes, too. Seed prices are very low indeed by overseas standards, and all seeds sold are 'open', i.e. they in their turn will bear germinating seeds. Many of the garden plants at the Nursery will be familiar to visitors from sub-tropical countries. Traditional flowers, hollyhocks, balsam, periwinkles, golden shower, Nile lilies, Royal Trumpets, camellia, and many others grow in profusion alongside flowers and bushes from less well known parts of the world. Many of the latest varieties from China and Thailand are also on display. The Country Wine produced at the Nursery is regarded by many as the best, full bodied sweet damson wine available. The husband and wife team of U Swe Myint and Daw San San Yee are very well known at home and abroad for their astonishing range of horticultural produce, and their unstinting contributions to the national development of viable orchids, seeds and bulbs. Both speak Myanmar and English and are very welcoming and informative to their visitors. |
